Bursting with love to give.
Lent on by loved ones.
Giving herself to others.
She inhales a moment of light.
Just her.
I am a mother and a solopreneur, amongst many things. As I wake and run through the day ahead in my mind, it can often feel like the space to breathe and the time to pause will be non-existent.
Meditation is a beautiful and magical practice, but it can feel hugely unobtainable to those of us who have busy lives.
In recent years, I have learnt to look for the beauty in those everyday, inconspicuous opportunities. Those small meditative movements and healthy rituals that I now sprinkle into my day. They have made a real difference to me. I would love to share them with you and hear what practices you have in place too.
WALKING
It seems there are a lot of misconceptions about mediating, but walking meditation is actually a thing. I find walking a wonderful way to find peace. Getting outside into the morning light always makes me feel good. Walking my dog or doing the school run are everyday occurrences that I use as opportunities to be more mindful. I make myself aware of the ground beneath my feet, taking note of the rhythm of my steps and breath, while trying to be present in that moment and appreciating the beauty in my surroundings.
MORNING MOMENTS
I love the notion of micro-meditation, short, frequent bursts of meditation with no stillness required. My everyday, morning routine allows me to practise my rituals and was one of the key instigators that led me to creating a brand focused on wellness jewellery. I was doing micro-meditation without even realising it! Putting on my jewellery, and in particular my Ritual Bracelets, gives me that moment to pause. I rotate and caress Ritual Beads several times a day, using deep breaths to bring awareness and presence. The whole practice takes about 60 seconds, but it helps me feel supercharged throughout the day.
CREATING MOMENTS
I’m so grateful that my business is also my passion project. I find designing and making jewellery for Roàmaci so calming and therapeutic. I put on a podcast and use my NEOM Wellbeing Pod or burn an essential oil candle. It requires my full concentration which helps quiet my busy mind, keeping it calm and focused. Mindful hobbies and getting creative with our hands are known to be good for our mental wellbeing. It means we are giving something our full attention and fully immersed in the moment. Cooking, journaling and gardening are all said to be good mindful hobbies.
MAGICAL DROPS
I love going to places overlooking water when I need to focus on ideas or be creative.
Simply standing and taking in the calm or even choppy waters helps bring a sense of clarity. Water has a soothing effect which makes it an ideal place to mediate. I’m lucky enough to have a coastline nearby, but even those of us who are landlocked can use water to harness mindfulness - think duck ponds in the local park or inland lakes.
If all else fails, and I just can’t find the time to get out to the coast or a lake, I love taking a bath or a long shower when the children are in bed. It feels like a beautiful release and is a great opportunity to be alone and practise meditation.
MEDITATION FOR FIDGETS
Personally, I find that even if I have the time to sit still, I’m a fidget. I’m also a tactile person so the process of tapping intrigued me. Tapping is a technique which comes from the ancient Chinese practice of acupuncture and involves using your fingertips to tap and stimulate points on the body where energy is said to flow. It is believed to help reduce tension and bring emotional balance. It’s not for everyone and requires some practice. Calm.com [Link] has some great information and resources on tapping. My children always laughed when they noticed me tapping but then curiosity got the better of them and they started having a go. It’s now a lovely mindfulness activity for the whole family to take part in.
